Late August, early September is the time when we harvest the Serpentine Green Hives.
All seven hives are doing extremely well after we moved them to a new location at the centre.
Each hive can home over 70,000 bees so we still have about half a million bees working away in our hives.
Each hive can also produce from 20 to 60 pounds of honey a year and in ideal conditions and with correct management some can do more.
We have just removed 10 Supers (Layers where the bees store the honey). It is estimated that each super holds about 10 jars of honey each, so that’s 200 jars of pure honeylious goodness.
Due to them doing so well, we will be increasing the hives to 10 next year, and hopefully increase the honey production, we are looking at selling the honey on behalf of the beekeeper (Dave, who actually owns the hives).
